Welcome to “Fragments and Realisations” the site for the artwork of John Shanks.

The site has been arranged around the main themes of the work as well as the working titles and it is intended that the site will be a dynamic place to visit with some ever changing additions as well as the exploration of new ideas and works.

Feedback is always welcome and if you see a synergy with your own ideas and your own work please suggest a link that could be included.

Ostensibly much of the artwork here is based on photography though as you will continue to see the initial images created are from various perspectives, combined, and added to, adapted or varied to take account of the theme or project being undertaken.

You will find very few pictorial references to people on these pages and where these exist they exist either as a memory of the person or as a recollection of a time and place.

I make no great claim that every image here is a “good photograph” they are here because they “make sense of” something otherwise intangible.

Born in 1950 in Glasgow, I have had a lifelong interest in the arts supported by my parents to whom I am eternally grateful.

Early interests were in theatre, painting and sculpture and an early aspiration was to combine these with a very early interest in art teaching.

I made the fateful but correct decision to attend the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama taking the technical course in Stage Management which was both a challenge and an inspiration.
